Fursuit Care and Fabric Guide by Pawstabilities ‘25
Hello! For the best experience and longevity of a fursuit from Pawstabilities, here is a care guide. If my guide isn’t enough to help you get started or you have any other questions contact me via my email at [email protected].
Washing, cleaning, and drying
I highly recommend hand washing and spot cleaning the head. Grab a fursuit safe cleaner without dyes or sulfates. Etsy sells excellent soap specifically for cleaning fursuits. I recommend something called fursuit bath bars personally that you can wet and gently wash with. If you decide not to go with a bath bar, you want a little bit of fabric friendly soap on a soft damp washcloth and carefully clean the desired areas. The part I recommend cleaning the most is the inside, I line my heads with neoprene and cotton now. The neoprene lining is waterproof but can potentially get smelly after long usage. Clean this part with the same method listed above or spray the area with a fursuit spray which can be found through other sellers. Spraying after each short usage should keep it in spiffy shape. You don’t want to wash the fursuit after every usage, just when it’s necessary such as after a convention or hours of continuous usage. You DO NOT want to soak the fursuit head or get them soaking wet for long periods of time, this can cause parts of the suit to collapse on itself due to the weight of the wet fabric being heavier than the foam structure its built on.
After a gentle wash, the head should be towel dried. You DO NOT want to use heat from a blow drier or something hot to dry the suit. What you want is a fan, set it up in front of the damp suit and rotate it every few hours or when needed. This part takes time, usually a day or so for some suits of mine. This part is just as important as washing since you don’t want any water left in the suit that can turn into mildew.
Green machine carpet and couch cleaner is safe to used on my suits after a year of wear and usage.
Hands, tails, bodysuits and feet can be machine washed on the most delicate and most cold washer temperature.
For specialized commissioned parts, reach out to me for more details about how to best clean.
With all that being said, other parts to help you maintain your suit include brushing. Brush after each use with a tangle teaser that you can buy on Amazon or Walmart for cheap. Do NOT use a slicker brush on the head, it will rip out the fur and since the fur can be short in areas, it can harm the fursuit itself.
